Abudnace 2013….

This year the Abundance Nottingham group will only be running two picks, but that does mean they will be great.

We will be having picks on:
Sunday 6th October 11am until later – Seninton
Meet at Sneinton market.

Sunday 3rd November 11am until later – Lenton
Meet outside the Savoy Cinema on Derby road

We will try and find many trees to harvest, pick and eat fruit.
It will be lots of fun.
Please bring decent outdoor clothes and shoes and be prepared for the weather.

It would be great to see lots of you there.
We are only running two picks due to a lack or organisational volunteers and time. If you would like to ensure this projects is bigger and better for next year then please get involved.

Abundance pick Forest Fields 30th Sept….

We had jolly good fun within Forest fields. Lots of volunteers and loads of fruit (mainly cookers). Fruit has been distributed to soup kitchens, NG7 food bank and Veggies catering .

Some of the bruised excess apples have also been converted juice and hopefully some celebratory cider by Summerwood Community Gardens. Cheers!

First Abundance pick of 2012!

The first pick of 2012 was in the Lenton area of Nottingham. We had seven eager volunteers and spent a few hours visiting tree we already knew about and finding some new ones.

We managed to pick a bag of plums, two bags of pears and a bag of apples. This has been sorted and is making its way to two community groups within Nottingham. The plums would not keep so they have been made into 9 jars of jam for distribution.

Thanks to everyone who came along to this pick and for the people who let us pick the fruit from their trees. While not as abundant as last year (the same trees yeilded over 80kgs of apples) this fruit would all have gone to waste if it had been left unpicked.

Please come along to our next pick which will be in Forest Fields (meet at The Forest tram stop at 11am) on Sunday 30th Septemeber.

Abundance activity 2012

Abundance is back for the harvest season of 2012. Abundance Nottingham is a volunteer run group which collects excess fruit, mainly apples and pears, and distribute it to local community groups. This is the year to join in, the harvest is upon us and we need as many volunteers as possible. It is a great way of getting out and about, meeting some different people, climbing some trees (if you want to), learning about fruit and generally having scrumping fun. Also, there are usually as many apples as you can possibly and cider for volunteers when its ready!
We are doing regular picking sessions on Sundays meeting at 11am at the following dates and locations:
  • Sunday 23rd Sept – Lenton Pick – meet at: Savoy Cinema, Derby Road
  • Sunday 30th Sept – Forest Fields Pick – meet at: Forest Fields Tram stop
  • Sunday 7th Oct – Arnold Pick- To be confirmed changed to Forest Field meet at: The Forest tram stop
  • Sunday 14th Oct – Wollaton Pick – meet at: Farndon Green outside the Post Office. (Farndon Green is just off Middleton Boulevard between the Derby Road and Wollaton Road roundabouts)
  • Sunday 21st Oct – Sneinton Pick – meet at: Sneinton Market
  • Sunday 28th Oct – Forest Fields Pick – meet at: Forest Fields Tram stop
  • Sunday 4th Nov – Lenton Pick – meet at: Savoy Cinema, Derby Road
(Tea and biscuits provided. Bring some food to share, if you’d like.)
You can join in for as much or as little time as you like. We generally
spend around 4-5 hours on these picking sessions, but that depends upon the
harvest.
Please spread the word to any other people who might be interested – we rely
upon enthusiastic volunteers.

REGISTER INTEREST IN ABUNDANCE FOR 2011

Abundance is now taking a well-earned rest from all the tree scaling, fruit picking, and redistribution from autumn 2010.

Along with the trees, we are hibernating!

However, seasons being seasons we will start up again from the end of summer 2011.

To remind, we are 100% volunteer led and volunteer run and rely on community support and input to keep going.

So if avoiding fruit waste, promoting healthy eating and getting involved with the local community sound like your thing, we would love to hear from you – get in touch with us now to register your interest…

Here are some of the ways you can get involved with Abundance from end summer/autumn 2011:

– collect fruit
– scout out new trees
– scout out new distribution points who could use the fruit
– run a chutney or jam-making workshop
– give us stuff! Jam jars, recipe books, tarpaulins, apple pickers…. bike grease, the works….
– help out with publicity

To register your interest:

1. Email abundancearea4@gmail.com and put ‘volunteer’ in the subject heading
2. Tell us what you’d like to get involved in
